The National Middle School Association defines a middle school as a school that is structured to meet the needs of young adolescents (ages 10-15). A more detailed definition of middle school is
-a school with grades 6-8 that usually has a flexible day
-a guidance program, including an advisory plan (see Advisory tab for ours)
-an exploratory program
-varied instructional practices for the different needs of students
-continued communication with students, parents, and teachers.
A middle school creates a community of learners and focuses on the individual successes and needs of students. Teachers are prepared and educated specifically for a middle school setting and what the needs are for young adolescents. All students are expected to think critically, lead a healthy life, and behave in an ethical manor. Most importantly, though, middle school is the time to create close, trusting relationships which will encourage students to learn in a safe and comfortable environment.
