Many people believe that "junior high" and "middle school" are terms that are interchangeable; but, they couldn't be more different. Junior high schools were originally created to prepare students for high school in one of two ways. The first was to provide a curriculum for students preparing to go to college or the second option was to provide training for students who will eventually enter into the workforce. About forty years after the creation of junior highs, some issues began to surface. Some of these problems were that they were too subject-centered, classes were teacher-centered and textbook centered. After these problems arose, there was a push for a more student centered approach, rather than subject centered. There was also more of an emphasis on both cognitive and affective development, instead of just cognitive. This will allow them to learn, mature and grow in a healthy way since there are so many changes that occur during middle school. Another difference between junior high and middle school is that middle school teachers and students are organized into interdisciplinary teams instead of by subject. Classrooms for the team are also in close proximity instead of spread throughout the school.
How does Central Middle School fit the Middle School Philosophy?
Central MS makes special effort to focus on the special needs of students. For students who have behavior issues, there are individual plans catered for each of their needs. There are also different leveled classes in order to fit the academic needs for each student. Classrooms are organized into interdisciplinary teams for each grade level and meet daily to discuss the needs of students. Classrooms for each team are in one hallway to make it easier for students to get to class on time. We have a guidance office and advisors to help students throughout the day either with academics or emotional issues. Teachers and staff are continually available for students to prepare them for the future and help them learn and grow in an effective and healthy way.
